Selection of Supervisor/Project Mentor
Your dissertation work will be guided by a mentor duly recognized by the Indira Gandhi National Open University. Learners can choose a mentor, who is well-versed in the discipline of anthropology, i.e., either from physical/social/archaeology depending upon the topic chosen. All Academic Counselors of the MAAN Programme at the Study Centres are recognized as Academic Supervisors for guiding your project work. Apart from this, a learner can also select a supervisor of his/her own choice from any University/College. The eligibility of a person to become a supervisor/guide is as follows:
- A person having a doctoral degree in the discipline of Anthropology and should be working in the University/College.
Or - A person having a Master’s Degree/M.Phil. in Anthropology with two years of experience and should be working in the University/College.
Or - A person related to the discipline holding a position in any university or institute.
If you are taking an Academic Supervisor of your choice (from University/College teachers), send a brief bio-data of him/her along with the proposal to the Programme Coordinator at New Delhi for approval. The names of the supervisors will be approved by the IGNOU faculty of Anthropology before the study is undertaken. The supervisor will approve your project proposal, guide you through the preparation of your dissertation, and certify the work you have done.
Project Proposal Submission and Approval
Learners should send the project proposal proforma along with one copy of the research proposal (synopsis) of approximately 2000 words and Bio-data of the supervisor to the Programme Coordinator of the (MAAN), discipline of Anthropology, School of Social Sciences, Academic Complex Block-F, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi-110068 for approval, and a copy of the same research proposal should be submitted at your regional centre.
Send your proposal through Registered or Speed Post only so that it reaches the Programme Coordinator for sure. Before you post your Proposal, make sure that the cover page of the proposal is according to the format given in Appendix-I and all information (your name, address for correspondence, enrolment number, name and code of your Study Centre and Regional Centre, tentative title of the proposal, and the name and address of your Academic Supervisor) is furnished. You will take approval from your academic counselor for the proposal. Make sure the Academic Counselor or the teacher who has agreed to supervise your project work has affixed his/her signature on the cover page of your proposal.
Submission of Project Report/Dissertation
Before binding your dissertation, ensure that all pages are arranged in the correct order and format. Make sure the cover page of the dissertation proposal, approved by the Faculty/Committee, is attached to the dissertation. Prepare two copies of the dissertation, one to be submitted to the University. The University will not return the evaluated dissertation, so keep a copy for yourself. Double-check for any typing errors before binding and submitting.
Submit a spiral-bound copy of your dissertation for the Master’s in Anthropology to the Regional Director of your IGNOU Regional Centre. You can submit it either by registered post/speed post or by hand. Clearly write “Dissertation – MAAN” on the envelope to help with sorting.
You can submit your dissertation before the term-end exam, by May 15th for the July session or November 15th for the January session. The presentation of your fieldwork in the dissertation is important for marking.

There will be a Viva after the evaluation of the dissertation. The Viva-Voce for the dissertation will be conducted at the end of the Term End Examination (TEE). Viva-Voce is conducted to test your proficiency in the research work. The Viva-Voce will be conducted in your concerned IGNOU Regional Center. A learner may be asked to appear for a Viva-Voce. In this case, the learner will be duly informed.
You are requested to appear at the concerned IGNOU Regional Center with the following:
- IGNOU’s ID card.
- Personal copy of the dissertation (hard and soft).
- Call letter sent from the Regional Center.
It should be strictly noted that without these you will not be permitted for the Viva-Voce. Additionally, you need to present your work for 15 minutes during the Viva-Voce. For this, you need to bring your copy of the dissertation along. Viva will be conducted by a panel of experts.
How well a research work satisfies the criteria determines the marks it receives. In general, a research work is expected to meet the requirements of all the criteria equally. For successful completion of the fieldwork dissertation, a learner should secure a minimum of 40% marks.
